Your roof is a very important part of your home. But how often to think about it, or even inspect it? When you do decide to look it over is your mind flooded with questions? If you do, you're not alone. Many homeowners have the questions about their roofs, and here are a few answers to some troubling questions.

What Is Roof Flashing Damage?

Flashing are made from galvanized steel or aluminum. They are placed on the roof joints and wall construction to keep water from seeping in and causing damage. Most roofs have flashing installed around the chimneys, pipes, and skylights.

Damage to flashing usually occurs due to oxidation, deterioration due to weather, or flashes that have come loose. Most flashing problems require a simple patching job. Roofers often make their own flashing out of sheet metal. You can also buy them pre-formed. You can install flashing easily using roofing cement or caulking material.

How To Remove Stubborn Black Stains?

Streaky black stains are unsightly, but not often covered by roofing warranties because they do affect the performance of the shingle or roof. These black streaks are a type of algae. It won't damage your shingles, but it does give your home a bad appearance. You can remove these stains by following a few simple steps.

You need a pump spray, a bleach/water solution, and a ladder.

  1. Mix one part bleach with two parts water
  2. Wet the black streaky area with the mixture
  3. Scrub the area using a soft window-washing brush

Don't use a pressure washer to wash the shingles. The forceful jet of water from it can damage your shingles. You can prevent the algae from returning by installing strips of copper or zinc along the roof's ridges. Rainwater washes over these strips, picking up ions that help inhibit algae growth as it runs across your shingles.

Is It Necessary To Remove Old Roofing Material Before Re-Roofing?

When it comes to roof layers, more is not better. While you can shingle over old roofing material, only one layer is acceptable. Two or more layers are not a good idea. The weight of shingle layers can cause problems. There are advantages to removing all old shingles and starting with a fresh new single layer.

  • Looks better
  • Lasts longer
  • reduces weight

While stripping the old shingles seems like a lot of extra work, you'll be happier with your home's appearance and the durability of your new roof.
